Starting Monday, police will again monitor compliance with lockdown measures against the Corona pandemic. For this purpose, 1,000 police trainees are available as personnel reserve.
Indeed, 2nd year trainees can be deployed as a reserve under the guidance of experienced officers, the Interior Ministry said on Friday as published by the Austrian Press Agency. “The intensity of the controls remains high,” announced the Interior Ministry.
So far 115,000 checks in lockdown for unvaccinated people
Since Monday until Thursday, about 115,000 checks had been carried out across Austria and about 700 reports and organ mandates had been filed or issued. The checks are based on two pillars: on the one hand, general patrols, such as traffic controls, are part of every official act. In addition, there will be focus operations by the on-call units and specialized patrols together with the health authorities, of which there will be at least two per district.
The ministry also pointed out that citizens have an obligation to cooperate. If, for example, there is an exception for the exit restriction, one must make this credible to the police.
Nehammer appeals to people’s responsibility
“The lockdown controls are necessary to contain the spread of the pandemic,” said Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). “I appeal to the responsibility of the people to support the police in their difficult service.”
He called on the population to “take the measures in force seriously and comply with them.” He added that the police are partners of the population and the health authorities: “That is why we will implement these controls with a sense of proportion and common sense, but also with due severity if necessary,” Nehammer announced.
